Mourners filled the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church on Tuesday afternoon for the funeral of Rayshard Brooks. Hundreds filed past his gold-coloured casket at a public viewing at the church, where the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. preached until his assassination in 1968.
Brooks, 27, died after a police confrontation in an Atlanta Wendy’s parking lot escalated to gunfire. An autopsy conducted shows Brooks was shot twice in the back. The medical examiner’s office ruled the death a homicide.
Brooks’ widow, Tomika Miller, dressed in white, sat surrounded by family and friends. Former state lawmaker Stacey Abrams and Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, both of whom have been mentioned as potential running mates for Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, were among the mourners.
The death of Brooks — another in a long line of Black Americans killed by police — further heightened racial concerns in the United States at a time of national reawakening over racism and police brutality.
